Nature

Nature

Soil and climate determine the rules.

Which grape varieties should be planted where, which vineyards yield great wines and which vineyards simply good: this knowledge has been carefully passed down to us from the generations before. The geological factors are the indisputable constants. Simply said, that means for us limestone or schist and sometimes both over one another.

Lake Neusiedl and warm air masses from the east determine the climate and in certain vineyards and expositions, this is often moderated by cool winds from the Leitha Mountains. Only the weather disrupts the eternal course of nature and steers my wines in new, exciting directions every year.

Leithaberg

The Leitha Mountains, called Leithagebirge in German, are old.
They have marked our landscape for a billion years.

The schist that you find on the Goldberg or also in the Ried Haidsatz stems from this period. During a much later time a sea covered the Leitha Mountains, which then receded millions of years ago and left mussel shells and fossils behind. In the course of time, metre-thick limestone layers formed over the schist. This geology leaves its stamp on many of my wines.

The Leitha Mountains are the last manifestation of the Alps and are also a topographic and climatic factor. They block cold air masses from the west, yet open to cool winds from the north that lend our wines delineation and structure.

The lake

Lake Neusiedl is incomparable to any other lake in Austria.

It is located in the steppe and is only one or at the most two metres deep. It used to dry out occasionally and this came with drought damage and harvest sacrifices. The Einser Channel now regulates water content. This unique landscape was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in the year 2001. The influence of the lake is felt particularly in the Ried Marienthal and below it, in the Ried Pratsche where summers are warmer and autumns more humid. The lake contributes to the realization of my concept of the vineyard as a biotope. Its idiosyncratic climate conditions offer ideal habitats for rare bird species, insects and plants.
