The Vineyards

To the southeast of Schützen, between the village and Neusiedler Lake, the hill called Schützner Stein rises 225 metres above the lake. On its slopes are found all of the remarkable vineyards that give the wines of Schützen their fine reputation.

The hilltop is a nature reserve. Clearing, building and the use of tractors are prohibited.
Goldberg is undisputedly the best vineyard. Its special soil conditions (mineral-rich, slaty) and its microclimate make it the ideal location for growing powerful Blaufränkisch grapes.  The two vineyards Ungerbergen and Altenberg are perfect for late maturing varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Overlooking the lake are the Seeberg and Sinner vineyards with their marine limestone soils. This is where the grapes are grown for the great white wines of Prieler.
