The Magic of the Region
Schützen lies only a few kilometres from the National Park around Neusiedler Lake and about nine kilometres from the provincial capital, Eisenstadt. The surrounding province is not especially big, but it has a very special magic.
To the west, just beyond the village, begin the slopes of the "Leithagebirge" with their scrub oaks and mighty beeches. To the east, there are views across the lake and its broad band of reeds all the way to the boundless expanse of the Pannonian lowland plain.
The lakeshore and adjoining countryside are part of a bird-protection area with a wealth of species found nowhere else in Europe. The hilltop of the Schützner Stein with the vineyards immediately adjacent to it is also a protected area.
It is a highly unusual landscape that produces highly unusual wines.
